The holidays are here, and so is a busy month in West Meade! Santa is coming through on a firetruck, we’re asking you to urge Metro Schools to add a walking path at Hillwood High, and we’re hosting an interest meeting on rebuilding Westmeade Elementary School.

West Meade Connect - Block Captains Needed

CM Druffel and WMNA have initiated a project called West Meade Connect (WMC). WMC is a network of “block captains” that are responsible for communicating with a set of neighbors, particularly in times of inclement weather or other natural disasters. The block captains would alert neighbors of potential threats, check on neighbors during those times, and coordinate with neighbors who want to assist in helping others in need. A “block” would be a group of 25 or more closely located neighbors. Metro Emergency Management and the non-profit Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) suggest that a neighborhood network like this is the best way to ensure safety during trying times. Representatives from the VOAD will be speaking at a future meeting, and will offer training on how to prepare for natural disasters early in 2027.

You may be hearing from a West Meade Connect block captain or receiving a flyer about the program. If you would like to be a part of the network, follow the instructions and join the block!

Environmental Overlay Updates

If you live on a hillside within West Meade, you are probably aware that WMNA is sponsoring the creation of a parcel overlay to combat destructive development that puts hillside lots in danger of property- and life-threatening landslides. The ordinance for an overlay has been reviewed by Metro Legal for analysis, and should be presented to Planning and the Metro Council in late 2026 or early 2027. If you live on a hillside, and have not heard of the Environmental Overlay, contact us at eo@westmeade.org. So far, we have obtained over 60% of hillside residents’ agreement with the overlay, and need more!

Tennessee Supreme Court Rules in Favor of State, Cutting Metro Council to 20 Members

Please pay attention to more news from Thom Druffel and us on the upcoming elections in AUGUST 2027! All zoning, development, and other important issues go directly through out Council Member!

Big Old Tree Competition

The Nashville Tree Foundation had again its Big Old Tree Competition where Davidson County residents can nominate a large tree in their or a neighbor’s property. For each tree species, the tree with the largest sum of trunk circumference, height and canopy width wins. West Meade again had 5 winners, adding to more than 50 winners over the years. Especially one the Chestnut oaks growing only on our high ridgelines and are older than 100 years wins every year. Venture out and enter any really big tree you see into the competition next year. We can help measure it, if needed.

Also, be aware that in 2027 West Meade residents can order up to three free trees from Root Nashville, again. We love to report that this year 119 residents ordered more that 300 trees, each worth between $ 120 – 150, more than in any other year before. They will be delivered in January.

Call for Beautification Officer

In Nashville, Tennessee, a beautification commissioner or member of the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission works to keep local neighborhoods clean, green, and attractive by coordinating volunteers, city departments, and community groups.
